My Joy (and my Anxiety)

When Inside Out 2 came out this year, Hannah told us that she wanted to see it.  So, I watched Inside Out with her and the next day we went to see Inside Out 2 together.

For those who have not seen it, it is the cute sequel to 2015 Disney Pixar coming of age movie about emotions.

We saw it, and soon after that, Hannah was obsessed with Inside Out 2: particularly the character Anxiety.  All summer, she was drawing pictures of Anxiety.  

A few weeks later, Hannah declared that we would be Inside Out 2 characters this Halloween.  She told us that Amanda would be Disgust (Dree would approximate Duh Guh Guh for disugusting) , and I would be Embarrassment.  Grandma Char would be Sadness and Grandpa Dan would be Fear.  So by the end of July, we had decided we would be decorating our trunk of our car at Trunk or Treat.

Tonight, for the first time in 5 years, the Cismesias will participate in Trunk or Treat.  It was a tradition that Mandy and I started in October of 2014 as lego people.  Hannah's first trunk or treat was farm (2016).  Audrey's first trunk or treat was Wreck it Ralph (2018).  She was a cute Fix it Felix.  Her second trunk or treat was Toy Story 4 (2019).  She was Buzz Lightyear.

That first year, Audrey was Fix it Felix because Wreck it Ralph was Hannah's favorite movie.  The second year that Audrey did Trunk or Treat, she was Buzz Lightyear because Hannah had a cute Jesse costume and Audrey was the tag along again as Buzz.  We felt a little sad for Audrey because she was kind of a tagalong character again.  

The year after Toy Story was 2020.  We stopped doing trunks until this year.  In 2022, Audrey was Pikachu, Hannah was Evie, and her cousin was Charmander..
Audrey was a cute Pikachu.  Her approximation of CHUUUU was also the cutest.
It was also a little sad because Audrey was on the ketogenic diet then.  It felt bad to restrict Audrey from candy.   

That year was the first year that Audrey did the Superhero Center Trunk or Treat.  We ran up to each trunk and handed them an Audrey Ketogenic alternative.  

And now, Amanda is getting Anxiety ready and in about an hour, we will be at our first trunk or treat in 5 years.  We are dressing up as fear, anxiety, embarrassment, disgust, and sadness.
Hannah is a spot on Anxiety.  Great job with makeup, Mom. 

And of course, our emotions wouldn't be complete without our Joy.  An appropriate costume for the real joy you brought to us.   Love you Dree.  Happy Halloween- Love, Embarrassment, Disgust and Anxiety

I started writing this post on Monday July 15th after experiencing many firsts and seconds on as we approach the anniversary of Audrey leaving for heaven.   This post took me over three weeks to write.  I had to think about why it took so long and the truth is, I am not on the same calendar that I used to be. I knew the fourth of July was going to be hard.  Audrey loved the fourth.  On social media, Mandy posted pictures of Audrey enjoying all of her summer favorites.  From June 26th to July 4th, Mandy posted a different picture of Audrey's summer favorites.  Starting on July 1st, she posted a daily picture of Audrey loving the fourth of July. It Doesn’t Get Any Easier (Amanda's)

  When we first lost Audrey, people often said, or we read in grief books, how in child loss it doesn’t get any easier. There was always some variation of:  It’s hard to know what “it doesn’t really ever get any easier” means when you’re first in the throws of it though, and the shock is so intense. I’ve also come to understand that for me, personally, the shock has been profound and longer lasting than for some others. 15 months in, it’s still really hard for me to grasp most days that Audrey is gone, and that it’s permanent. But it truly isn’t any easier than it was in those first weeks. Which is really hard to fathom if you think about it- How can our world still be as rocked and shaken as it was then, how can this still be as painful and sad and traumatic as then?- Yet it still is. (Amanda's) Disorganized Thoughts- Approaching One Year

I can’t believe it’s almost been a year without Audrey. I’ve tried several times in the past year to write, but I can never quite put my thoughts together into anything coherent to share. Many of you that are closest to me have listened to me attempt to share about grief in the past year- I appreciate your patience and understanding as I ramble on, sometimes with emotion and sometimes without, tend to ruminate over the same thoughts again and again, and try to capture the ways that I am missing Audrey, which are so hard to convey into words. I find the sadness becoming heavier again as the anniversary approaches. I try to focus on what my faith says is true about where Audrey is now and about how God loves and holds her, but the sadness and trauma of the events replay often.
