May 18 Memories- Huskie Hustle



 Hannah ran the Huskie Hustle with Mandy and I today.  We added it up.  It was her 6th 5k she has run/walked in.

I looked up all of her results and this is what I found:

2023 Superhero Sprint- Doty Park, Belvidere 4/29/23     45:32:10

2023 Epilepsy Fall Fest 5k- Cantigny Park, Wheaton 9/23/23 Fun Run- no official results  44:47

Here are my memories of Hannah's 5ks and how Audrey was a part of them.

2021 Turkey Trot- Atwood Park, Rockford 11/25/21  1:05:00


This was Hannah's first 5k.  She ran it in 1:05.  We ran it on Thanksgiving 2021.  Hannah ran the first mile pretty fast and then pooped out. She kept going though.  This was the only 5k that Audrey was not there to cheer her on.


2022 Turkey Trot- Atwood Park, Rockford 11/24/22 50:00.0

Hannah PR'd in her 2nd 5k by 15 minutes.  Her sister joined her at the beginning of the race, but had to go home.   Hannah showed much improvement on her 2nd 5k.


2023 Superhero Sprint- Doty Park, Belvidere 4/29/23     45:32:10 (officially this is Audrey's 

This time, Hannah's 3rd 5k, Audrey cheered her on the whole time.  It was unofficially her PR at 45:32.  I say unofficial, because officially that was Audrey's time.  Hannah  was bib 65 and Audrey was bib 62.  For some reason, Hannah's results didn't show up on the page.  
Audrey was pushing her sister to keep improving.  Hannah did awesome.  She started off running fast.  It was a rainy day so it was not too hot. Hannah also finished off running fast at the end. 

2023 Huskie Hustle- Harlem HS, Machesney Park  5/20/23 50:29:4

Last year, in May, Hannah ran her 4th 5k.  She helped push Audrey in her stroller for her 2nd race.  Hannah did great with a 50 minute finish.  It was a beautiful day, and Audrey wanted to lay in the turf all day.  Later that day, the girls surprised me with a 40th birthday party.

Hannah's first 5k without Audrey.  Audrey's spirit pushed Hannah to  her fastest time of 44:47.  

2024 Huskie Hustle- Harlem HS, Machesney Park 5/18/24  51:05.3

Hannah's 2nd Huskie Hustle.  She was a little tired, and didn't run for most of it.  It was still way faster than her first 5k.  She ran it in 51 minutes.  Mandy got bib number "Two Two." Two was Audrey's favorite number.

I started writing this post on Monday July 15th after experiencing many firsts and seconds on as we approach the anniversary of Audrey leaving for heaven.   This post took me over three weeks to write.  I had to think about why it took so long and the truth is, I am not on the same calendar that I used to be. I knew the fourth of July was going to be hard.  Audrey loved the fourth.  On social media, Mandy posted pictures of Audrey enjoying all of her summer favorites.  From June 26th to July 4th, Mandy posted a different picture of Audrey's summer favorites.  Starting on July 1st, she posted a daily picture of Audrey loving the fourth of July. Those pictures meant a lot and meant a lot to see Audrey's loved ones interact and share summer memories.  When Mandy took Hannah to the bathroom, I looked to my phone to look at pictures of Audrey.  I was surprised when I found this picture. It Doesn’t Get Any Easier (Amanda's)

  When we first lost Audrey, people often said, or we read in grief books, how in child loss it doesn’t get any easier. There was always some variation of:  It’s hard to know what “it doesn’t really ever get any easier” means when you’re first in the throws of it though, and the shock is so intense. I’ve also come to understand that for me, personally, the shock has been profound and longer lasting than for some others. 15 months in, it’s still really hard for me to grasp most days that Audrey is gone, and that it’s permanent. But it truly isn’t any easier than it was in those first weeks. Which is really hard to fathom if you think about it- How can our world still be as rocked and shaken as it was then, how can this still be as painful and sad and traumatic as then?- Yet it still is. The sadness seems only to grow deeper and the fullness of missing all of who Audrey is continues to grow in our lives. Our family wasn’t complete before she came into our lives, and now we a...

(Amanda's) Disorganized Thoughts- Approaching One Year

I can’t believe it’s almost been a year without Audrey. I’ve tried several times in the past year to write, but I can never quite put my thoughts together into anything coherent to share. Many of you that are closest to me have listened to me attempt to share about grief in the past year- I appreciate your patience and understanding as I ramble on, sometimes with emotion and sometimes without, tend to ruminate over the same thoughts again and again, and try to capture the ways that I am missing Audrey, which are so hard to convey into words. I find the sadness becoming heavier again as the anniversary approaches. I try to focus on what my faith says is true about where Audrey is now and about how God loves and holds her, but the sadness and trauma of the events replay often. The natural rhythms of events that recur annually feel like counting down this year, reliving and replaying our ‘last’ of whichever special time it was with Audrey, leading up to August 7 th -10 th , and what...
